The young man who killed six people and injured seven others near UC Santa Barbara following multiple drive-by shootings was the son of filmmaker Peter Rodger, a second unit director on the first “Hunger Games” movie.
ABC News confirmed that an attorney for Peter Rodger said that his 22-year-old son Elliot Rodger was involved in the shooting.
Elliot, who was found with a gunshot wound and a semi-automatic handgun inside his vehicle, was among the dead on Friday night.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s office said it’s unclear whether he took his own life or was shot during two different gunfights with deputies. The suspect fled following the armed confrontation and crashed his black BMW into a parked car on Del Playa Drive.
The shooting spree started before 9:27 p.m. in the campus town of Isla Vista. The suspect shot at passerby at nine different locations in I.V. during a 10-minute time span.
Police now believe that the murderous rampage was a premeditated attack after investigating a video Elliot posted on YouTube on Friday in which he threatened violence on the area.
“I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you, you’ll finally see that I’m, in truth, the superior one, the true alpha male,” he said in the video. “After I’ve annihilated every single girl in the sorority house, I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there.”
He is believed to have been a student at Santa Barbara City College.
Peter Rodger also wrote, directed, produced and shot the 2009 documentary “Oh My God” that screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
