The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, unveiled on Thursday, makes the upcoming JJ Abrams-directed sequel look like a lengthy love letter to every series fan who hasn’t stopped complaining since 1999’s The Phantom Menace. From the dogfight inside the ruined hulk of a crash-landed Imperial Star Destroyer to the not-quite-a-surprise appearance in the last moments of the trailer of Han and Chewie, there’s not an uncomfortably racialized alien or a tousle-headed child in sight.
A few of the many, many Easter eggs jammed into the 110-second trailer: a robot hand, presumably Luke’s, the dunes of Jakku, a wrecked X-wing, Darth Vader’s crushed helmet, and what looks like Leia getting a lightsaber of her own. There are also new twists on old formulas: a black-armored villain who looks like an amped-up stormtrooper, a black TIE fighter, and of course Han Solo disguised as an old man … wait, no, that’s just present-day Harrison Ford.
The film opens on 18 December; the release of the new trailer coincides with California fan convention Star Wars Celebration, happening this week in Anaheim. Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew (who plays Chewbacca) and director JJ Abrams are among the Star Wars royalty in attendance.
Fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive — Reddit, notoriously a wretched hive of scum and villainy (and sarcasm), had plenty of in-jokey commentary. “Commander, tear this trailer apart until you’ve found those clues and bring me those theories, I want them alive!” wrote a redditor called blood_souls. The /r/starwars subreddit was humming with activity, some of it related to the new trailer, some of it related to Star Wars Celebration, all of it devoted to The Force Awakens.
The trailer premiered on YouTube at 2 pm EST and by 5:30 had been retweeted from the official Star Wars account some 37,000 times. The YouTube video counter hadn’t caught up with views as of this writing, but the video had gotten the thumbs-up button 105,000 times and the Facebook video of the trailer had logged some 3.6m views and 97,000 likes (Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook vice president Tom Stocky were the first two). By press time Google had indexed more than 1,200 articles on the trailer. At the end of the footage, fans were redirected to a countdown page for a different Star Wars product: the marketing campaign for EA’s upcoming video game Star Wars Battlefront, the trailer for which is set to launch at the convention at 10 am California time tomorrow.
  • This piece was amended on 16 April 2015; the planet is called Jakku.

US soul singer Percy Sledge, famed for his song When a Man Loves a Woman, has died aged 73.
Steve Green from talent agency Artists International Management Inc confirmed to the BBC that he had died at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday.
"He was one of my first acts, he was a terrific person and you don't find that in this business very often," said Green. "He was truly a standout."
When a Man Loves a Woman reached the top 10 twice in the UK.

It topped the US Billboard chart for two weeks in 1966, when it got to number four in the UK chart. It reached number two when it was re-released in the UK in 1987. Later this week it will be the 49th anniversary of the song's release.
Sledge was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and is a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
He started his working life as a hospital nurse in the early 1960s before he became a singer.
His other hits included Warm and Tender Love, It Tears Me Up and Take Time to Know Her.
Sledge is survived by his wife and children.

His biggest hit When A Man Loves a Woman found new life in 1991 when Michael Bolton's cover of the song topped the Billboard chart.
Sledge's version was the first US number one to have been recorded at Alabama's historic Muscle Shoals studio, where Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones would record.
It was also the first gold record for Atlantic Records.

Top Tennis Ace Andy Murray Marries Kim Sears in Dublane, Scotland

Just Murray-ed! Gathered crowds break into cheers as tennis ace Andy and new bride Kim emerge from Dunblane Cathedral as man and wife

  • Tennis star Andy Murray and fiance Kim Sears tied the knot this afternoon at Dunblane Cathedral
  • A huge cheer went up when the happy couple left the cathedral after saying 'I do'
  • New Mrs Murray wore an embroidered gown with elbow-length sleeves, thought to be by Jenny Packham
  • Reverend Colin Renwick led the marriage service and admitted to being 'nervous' beforehand
  • Earlier in the day, Andy tweeted his 2.98 million followers showing his plans for the big day - through emojis
  • Florists worked all morning to decorate the event with beautiful blooms including white hydrangeas
  • Happy couple are holding their reception at £1.8million luxury hotel Cromlix House, which Andy owns

  • It has been dubbed the Scottish wedding of the year and there was little doubt about the delight felt by the crowd gathered outside Dunblane Cathedral for the union of Kim Sears and Andy Murray this afternoon as a huge cheer went up when the happy couple emerged as man and wife.
The new Mr and Mrs Murray, who announced their engagement in November last year, tied the knot in the 12th century cathedral before a relatively small group of their family members and close friends.
At 5:43pm, bells rung out and the wedding guests showered the newlyweds with confetti as they left the 45-minute ceremony in the cathedral in the tennis star's hometown.

The pair will now celebrate with a reception at nearby Cromlix House, the £1.8million luxury country house hotel which the star owns.
Earlier, Kim arrived at the venue in a silver Rolls Royce and had to battle with the forecast rain; a smiling support team including her bridesmaids, dressed in pink, helping to keep the hem of her beautiful embroidered gown from trailing on the floor.
Her stunning dress, rumoured to be by Jenny Packham, had elbow-length sleeves and the bride was wearing her hair swept back from her face in a half-up and half-down do. Kim's tousled brunette locks were also pinned with a long, lace veil.

On her feet, a pair of strappy silver heels, thought to be by Jimmy Choo. The bride had four bridesmaids, all dressed in pink.
Mother-of-the-groom Judy Murray arrived just before 4.00pm looking resplendent in a white, to-the-knee overcoat with a detailed gold dress. The outfit was topped off with a dramatic gold hat by milliner William Chambers.

Reverend Colin Renwick led the service, which lasted 45 minutes.
Although the sun briefly shone earlier in the day, by the time bride-to-be Kim Sears arrived at the wedding venue, the wind and rain had arrived...leaving one wedding party guest to do battle with the umbrella that was supposed to be keeping the bride dry.

This morning, the historic cathedral saw florists toting huge bouquets of flowers arrive to decorate the church - as hailstones and showers battered the venue.
Clearly unable to contain his excitement in the run-up to his love match, tennis ace Murray posted a tweet to his 2.98 million followers which shows his plans for the day - through the use of emojis.
He tweeted an umbrella, a picture of a church, a ring, a kiss, cake, drinks including beer, cocktails and wine and ends with hearts, a face blowing a kiss and several Zzzz icons for sleep.

Nothing you can do about the weather! Looking beautiful in an embroidered white gown, bride-in-waiting Kim Sears arrived at Dunblane Cathedral in the forecast rain this afternoon... and got a helping hand from a smiling support party who kept her dress from touching the ground. On her feet were a pair of strappy silver heels, thought to be by Jimmy Choo
However the wet weather showed no sign of dampening the spirits of the crowds outside the cathedral.
Brenda Watson travelled from Ochiltree in Ayrshire with her friend to join in the celebrations.
She said: 'We forgot our hats but we're hoping the sun will shine for Andy and Kim. We're so excited about seeing them and the atmosphere is great, it's been well worth coming.'
Her friend Anne Gemmell from Stair in Ayrshire said Kim's dress might be 'something lacy and just chic.'
No doubt the couple will both be hoping the weather improves before the ceremony later on today - or the guests could get soaked.
Hundreds of the world's media were also in place to capture the event which has sparked interest around the globe.
Murray took a moment out of his wedding preparations to chat on Twitter this morning about a pre-wedding snooker game last night.
Tennis player Jamie Delgado tweeted: 'Pre-wedding snooker ended in another victory for guess who? Andy Murray, Rosco Hutchins, Johnny Delgado,' to which Murray replied: 'Jamie Delgado, Rosco Hutchins, Johnny Delgado, last night was actual carnage for those boys I couldn't believe it.'
The reception is being held at the 15-bedroom Cromlix House Hotel, located just outside the town, which Andy bought two years ago for £1.8 million.
Florists were working all morning to decorate the cathedral, wheeling in huge bouquets of white hydrangeas and full-sized cherry blossom trees.
Hundreds of locals gathered outside the cathedral to catch a glimpse of the pair who met as teenagers and have been together for more than nine years.
The proud Perthshire community has spent the last few days decorating the high street with bunting in preparation for the celebration which will be reported around the globe.
Murray fans have been posting their best wishes on social media and Scotland's First Minister has also offered her congratulations.
Hibernian FC tweeted: 'Best wishes from everybody at #Hibs to our supporter @andy_murray on his wedding day; have a great time! First dance to Sunshine on Leith?'
Murray said recently he will have three best men - his brother Jamie and friends Ross Hutchins and Carlos Mier.
Several names from the world of tennis are likely to be on the guest list, with former British number one Tim Henman among those tipped to appear.
Reports suggest Murray and Ms Sears had originally planned to marry at a chapel within the grounds of Cromlix House, which Murray purchased two years ago, but later opted for the 300-seat cathedral.

IT'S THE BIGGEST DAY OF THIS VICAR'S CAREER...BUT WHO IS REVEREND RENWICK?

Andy Murray's wedding was described as the nearest thing Scotland will have to a royal wedding - by the minister who will conduct the ceremony.
Reverend Colin Renwick, minister of Dunblane Cathedral, said yesterday: 'This is very special. Andy is one of Dunblane's own and there's genuine affection and pride in Andy, and there'll be a great affection for Kim too, I know,' he said.
'I wasn't involved in the royalty ones so I can't really tell, but it's been described as the nearest we'll have in recent times to a royal wedding.'
But what of the man behind the cloth?
Rev Renwick was educated at Breadalbane Academy, Aberfeldy, and both Aberdeen and Glasgow Universities. He has been described as 'a prodigious musical talent' as a former church organist, an excellent pianist and a fine tenor singer. Early in 2014 Rev Renwick announced that he had accepted a call to become the minister of Dunblane Cathedral. Previously Rev Renwick was at Jordanhill Parish Church for nearly 18 years and before that he was minister in Maybole for seven years. He has also done much work for the Church of Scotland's global missions.
At the time of his appointment he said: 'My impression of Dunblane is of a close-knit community, one that is very supportive of one another.
'Certainly it's a community I've found to be extremely welcoming. It's a community with a real heart and the cathedral is a big part of that.'

Louis Walsh QUITS X Factor? After 11 years the judge reveals he's 'done with the show'
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/louis-walsh-quits-x-factor-5496757

Speaking candidly on Irish television, the pop mogul says: "I want to get back to being a manager"

Pop mogul Louis Walsh has revealed he is “done with X Factor” after 11 years on the hit show.
The 62-year-old said he wants to go back to managing acts and expects TV bosses will want to bring in new faces to freshen up the panel.
The X Factor judge also said that Simon Cowell claims all the credit for the former five-piece boyband One Direction.
Speaking on TV3, he said: “I think I’m done with X Factor honestly. My day job is as a manager, I’ve kind of neglected that. I want to get back to being a manager.

“I’m working with Shane Filan, he’s got a new record coming out, and I’m working with Hometown. I’d like to get back to where I started off… I never wanted to be on TV, it just happened.”

He also said that his reason for leaving was due to the X Factor producers, adding that they reportedly think the show needs a shake-up.
He said: “I’ve done 11 seasons. That’s a long time on television. I think they’re going to change it, go for a few new faces.

But while Louis is ready to leave behind his X Factor days, he claims he will never be able to put his music business behind him.
He said: “If you don’t like this business you shouldn’t be in it. You have to be full time, you have to love it.
“I still love it. I still look at the charts, I still buy music, I still go to gigs. It keeps you young.”

The music manager, who was speaking on The Seven O’Clock Show with boyband Hometown, also had a jibe at fellow X Factor judge Cowell.
He said: “Simon takes most of the credit, but Nicole Scherzinger and I were very much involved as well.
“If it hadn’t of worked Simon would have said that it was our idea.
“But [Simon] did press all the buttons. He made it work.”
