The first Olympic Games were staged in 1896. 1948 - known as the "Austerity Games" following World War II; the first Summer Olympics since Berlin 1936. London is only the fourth capital city to host the Summer Olympics on more than one occasion - Paris, France (1900 & 1924), Stockholm, Sweden (1912 & 1956 - equestrian events only) and Athens, Greece (1896 & 2004) share this honour. 2012
United Kingdom
In terms of "sport-related costs", London 2012 is the most expensive Olympics ever at £8.4 billion ($13.01 billion), according to a report by Oxford University's Said Business School. The figure, which includes security, transport, opening and closing ceremonies, construction of venues and the athletes' village but excludes expensive infrastructure projects (such as those commissioned for Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), means that the London Games are now 100 per cent over its original budget, set at£4.2 billion ($6.5 billion) in 2004.
The report compares the cost of all Summer and Winter Olympic Games over the last 50 years. The 2008 Beijing Games were widely believed to be the most expensive Games on record with many estimates putting the total at £22 billion ($34.09 billion), but researchers believe the bill may have been £3.13 billion ($4.85 billion) due to China's cheaper labour.

Brunei were the only NOC not to be represented in Beijing.
There are currently 204 NOCs in existence, and with no countries threatening to boycott the London Olympics, it is expected that London will tie the record set by Beijing in 2008, even though only 200 nations have officially qualified for the Games. * This record was previously held by Athens 2004, with 201 NOCs represented. The number of participating NOCs has increased with every Olympics since Moscow 1980. As of 2012, there are a number of unrecognized NOCs, including Macau, Gibraltar, Montserrat and the Turks & Caicos Islands, so this record could well be broken at future Olympic Games.
