The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, unveiled on Thursday, makes the upcoming JJ Abrams-directed sequel look like a lengthy love letter to every series fan who hasn’t stopped complaining since 1999’s The Phantom Menace. From the dogfight inside the ruined hulk of a crash-landed Imperial Star Destroyer to the not-quite-a-surprise appearance in the last moments of the trailer of Han and Chewie, there’s not an uncomfortably racialized alien or a tousle-headed child in sight.
A few of the many, many Easter eggs jammed into the 110-second trailer: a robot hand, presumably Luke’s, the dunes of Jakku, a wrecked X-wing, Darth Vader’s crushed helmet, and what looks like Leia getting a lightsaber of her own. There are also new twists on old formulas: a black-armored villain who looks like an amped-up stormtrooper, a black TIE fighter, and of course Han Solo disguised as an old man … wait, no, that’s just present-day Harrison Ford.
The film opens on 18 December; the release of the new trailer coincides with California fan convention Star Wars Celebration, happening this week in Anaheim. Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew (who plays Chewbacca) and director JJ Abrams are among the Star Wars royalty in attendance.
Fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive — Reddit, notoriously a wretched hive of scum and villainy (and sarcasm), had plenty of in-jokey commentary. “Commander, tear this trailer apart until you’ve found those clues and bring me those theories, I want them alive!” wrote a redditor called blood_souls. The /r/starwars subreddit was humming with activity, some of it related to the new trailer, some of it related to Star Wars Celebration, all of it devoted to The Force Awakens.
The trailer premiered on YouTube at 2 pm EST and by 5:30 had been retweeted from the official Star Wars account some 37,000 times. The YouTube video counter hadn’t caught up with views as of this writing, but the video had gotten the thumbs-up button 105,000 times and the Facebook video of the trailer had logged some 3.6m views and 97,000 likes (Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook vice president Tom Stocky were the first two). By press time Google had indexed more than 1,200 articles on the trailer. At the end of the footage, fans were redirected to a countdown page for a different Star Wars product: the marketing campaign for EA’s upcoming video game Star Wars Battlefront, the trailer for which is set to launch at the convention at 10 am California time tomorrow.

Get ready for one last ride.

The full trailer for the third installment of the Sylvester Stallone-fronted action hero franchise has been released, showing plenty of brawn and brawls from Sly and fellow stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Terry Crews and Mel Gibson (Harrison Ford and his then-healthy ankle famously replaces Bruce Willis). The film also marks costar Wesley Snipes’ first post-prison role.

“The Expendables” franchise is a box office juggernaut for Lionsgate. The first film, which Stallone directed, grossed $274,470,394 worldwide. Simon West directed the second film, which grossed $311,979,256 worldwide.
Patrick Hughes is helming “The Expendables 3,” which bows August 15.

Harrison Ford has been injured on the set of Disney and LucasFilm’s new “Star Wars” movie.
According to Disney, the 71 year-old actor was hospitalized after sustaining a bad ankle injury during filming on Wednesday.
“He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care,” the statement reads.
Ford was at Pinewood studios in England when a hydraulic door reportedly fell down and hit him, possibly fracturing his ankle.
He was airlifted to a hospital shortly after the incident.

The J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: Episode VII,” co-starring Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, will continue shooting at Pinewood Studios while ‘Han Solo’ gets treatment.
The new “Star Wars” movie also stars newcomers John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver and hits theaters December 18, 2015.

This just in from the Star Wars front: Episode VII has cast 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie.

Though we don’t know who they play, it’s news that should be greeted with a joyful Ewok dance by many fans, especially those who were critical that the film’s earlier casting announcement was distressingly light on women.

Nyong’o, 31, a graduate of Yale’s drama school, made her breakthrough in 12 Years a Slave last year as Patsey, the fearsomely powerful but agonizingly trapped field slave who forges a sisterly bond with the movie’s main character, the kidnapped free man Solomon Northup.

Ever since claiming the Oscar, the industry has been wondering which role she will take next — although there have long been rumors that Nyong’o was under consideration for Star Wars. Many industry-watchers have speculated that the film business might be at a loss for how to utilize the actress. EW’s own Mark Harris even asked, “Why can’t Lupita Nyong’o find a role worthy of her?“
With this news, that question has been answered.
Christie is another compelling piece of casting. The Star Wars galaxy has plucked a the fan favorite from the Game of Thrones universe. The 6-foot-3 British actress, who will be 35 this year, is a literally towering presence as the unlikely female knight Brienne of Tarth — a formidable foe to any of the realm’s male warriors.
Her performance on the HBO series has won over even diehard devotees of George R. R. Martin’s books, who were initially reluctant about Christie’s casting. (Brienne is described as relatively ugly in the books, and the knock against Christie was that she was “too beautiful” for the part. The actress gave a fun reaction to EW’s James Hibberd about that: “All my life, all I’ve ever wanted is for people to say — first of all — I’m pretty. But ‘too pretty’? Is amazing.”)
Christie is also cast in another powerhouse franchise, co-starring in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 film as Commander Lyme. She’ll take over the role from actress Lily Rabe, who plays the past Hunger Games victor in Part 1.
Nyong’o and Christie are bold additions to an already impressive cast for the J.J. Abrams-produced-and-directed film. They join original trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Kenny Baker (R2-D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO.)
New additions include Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), John Boyega (Attack the Block), newcomer Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver (Girls), performance-capture maestro Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), and the iconic The Exorcist actor Max von Sydow.
The film, produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and veteran Abrams collaborator Bryan Burke,  is shooting now — with plans for a Dec. 18, 2015 release.
We don’t know who exactly the new characters will be — but given the caliber of actors playing them, Star Wars lovers might finally be able to say, “I’ve got a bad good feeling about this …”

May the Fourth Be With You

Star Wars Day is an unofficial holiday in May created by fans to honor the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. Observance of the holiday spread quickly due to Internet, social media, and grassroots celebrations.

May 4 is considered a holiday by Star Wars fans to celebrate the franchise's films series, books and culture.^[2] The date was chosen as "May the 4th" due to its sounding similar to the series' phrase "May the Force be with you" in which fans commonly say "May the fourth be with you".

History[edit]

The reference was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Thatcher's political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in The London Evening News that stated "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."^[3] This reading of the line has also been recorded in the UK Parliament's Hansard.^[4]
In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema. Produced by Sean Ward and Alice Quinn, festivities included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show; a costume contest with celebrity judges; and the web's best tribute films, mash-ups, parodies, and remixes on the big screen. The second annual edition took place on Friday, May 4, 2012.^[5]
Fans (even government officials^[6]) have celebrated Star Wars in a variety of ways in social media and on television.
Since 2013, Disney Parks have celebrated the holiday with several Star Wars events and festivities.^[7][8][9] The Walt Disney Company had purchased Lucasfilm including the rights to Star Wars in late 2012.^[10]
Minor League baseball teams such as the Toledo Mud Hens^[11] and the Durham Bulls^[12] have worn special uniforms as part of "Star Wars Day" promotions.

Revenge of the Fifth[edit]

Star Wars Day became so popular that the following day was jokingly called “Revenge of the Fifth,” a play on the “Star Wars” movie title “Revenge of the Sith.” On this day, fans let their “evil sides” come out by celebrating the Sith Lords and villains from the Star Wars series. ^[13]

May 25[edit]

The Los Angeles City Council declared^[14] May 25, 2007, as Star Wars Day, in honor of the 30th anniversary release date of Star Wars. A separate initiative for observing Geek Pride Day on May 25 is based on the Star Wars connection along with ties to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (see Towel Day) and Discworld.
