HENRY CAVILL AS CLARK KENT ON SET OF BATMAN VS SUPERMAN

First Look at ‘Batman v. Superman’ Star Henry Cavill On Set as Clark Kent

Courtesy of Sheila Weinstein Variety -  http://variety.com/2014/film/news/batman-v-superman-henry-cavill-clark-kent-costume-1201254938/

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Henry Cavill in costume as Clark Kent on the set of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” While Superman’s alter-ego is seen without his iconic glasses in the behind-the-scenes shot, Cavill is unmistakably inhabiting Superman’s secret identity as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent — for further proof, check out the name on his director’s chair.

Proving that he’s equally heroic off-screen, Cavill was photographed showing his support for the U.K.’s Royal Marine 1664 Challenge, displaying a shirt for the event, which is a fundraiser to help wounded and severely injured Royal Marines transition back into civilian life.
Cavill is an ambassador for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, which tweeted the photo.
The newest installment in the superhero franchise stars Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent opposite Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman.  Amy Adams is set to reprise her “Man of Steel” role of Lois Lane, while “Game of Thrones” actor Jason Momoa will appear as Aquaman/Arthur Curry, and Gal Gadot (“Fast and Furious 6″) will make her debut as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
“Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is currently slated for a May 2016 release.

SHIA LABEOUF ARRESTED ON BROADWAY

Shia LaBeouf Arrested at Broadway ‘Cabaret’ Performance

Courtesy of Stuart Oldham, Variety http://variety.com/2014/legit/news/shia-labeouf-handcuffed-escorted-out-of-broadway-cabaret-1201251983/

Is Shia LaBeouf “Sorry” or just plain sorry?
On Thursday night, the 28 year-old actor was arrested at the Broadway musical “Cabaret” in New York for raucous behavior.
He was booked and charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of criminal trespassing.
According to police, the “Transformers” actor was smoking inside the Studio 54 theater and acting “loud and disruptive” during the first act of the Tony-nominated musical, which stars Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming. Law enforcement officials were notified and handcuffed the actor during intermission, escorting him out of the venue.
Tony-nominee Benj Pasek tweeted that he saw LaBeouf crying outside Studio 54 as he spoke to the arresting officers.
LaBeouf, who recently starred in Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac,” made headlines in February for his odd behavior at the Berlin Film Festival, where he wore a paper bag over his head featuring the words “I’m Not Famous Anymore.” The red carpet incident was accompanied by an art installation in L.A. dubbed #IAmSorry. It referred to his plagiarized short film which got him in hot water with a comic book writer, spurring several apologetic tweets and sky-writings over Los Angeles.
Whether the “Cabaret” incident was part of LaBeouf’s “#IAmSorry” campaign is unclear but according to CBS2 in New York, two witnesses saw LaBeouf before the show looking distraught in a ripped shirt a block away from the theater. They said LaBeouf was chasing after a man who appeared to be homeless.
“Honestly, I wasn’t thinking of drunk or drugs,” one of the witnesses said. “I was thinking he was working on a role, because it was that extreme.”

WE REMEMBER MICHAEL JACKSON - JUNE 26 2014

Michael Jackson remembered five years later: After King of Pop's death, his influence still resonates in music

Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke have clearly been influenced by late Jackson. But nothing beats the real thing, as evidenced by success of the posthumously released, 'Xscape.'

Five years after his death, Michael Jackson sounds more alive than ever.
The style he patented back in the 1970s and 1980s has staged a comeback on the pop charts in the last year, channeled through the pervasive hits of Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars, and Daft Punk. They all reference the sumptuous, disco-era dance beats, spiraling falsetto vocals, and plush production that would have fit right in with the peak style of Jackson’s greatest solo albums: 1979’s “Off The Wall” and 1983’s “Thriller.”
On Mars’ current tour, he styles himself with the Afro, wide lapels and velvet suits fans will remember from a far younger Michael J.

All this stands in stark contrast to the brand of pop which dominated the scene in the year of the icon’s passing, 2009. Then, far more angular dance sounds ruled, pounding through hits like the Black Eyed Peas’ percussive “Boom Boom Pow,” or the new-wave-tinged Lady Gaga singles “Poker Face” and “Just Dance.” Those songs ranked as the No. 1, 2, and 3 hits of 2009, according to Billboard.
Less than 18 months after Jackson’s passing, his estate released his first posthumous album, “Michael.” It earned tepid reviews and no small number of accusations of exploitation.

The material wasn’t top rank but another factor in the resistance may have been that it was simply too soon.
By contrast, the “new” Jackson album, “Xscape,” released last month, has earned more respect and had greater commercial impact. It features nine never-before-released tracks, updated by top producers of today, like Rodney Jerkins and StarGate. In May, the disc opened at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 list, missing the top slot (snagged by the Black Keys) by just a few thousand copies. It did earn the pole position in the U.K., a feat it matched in six other European countries. “Xscape” remains in the U.S. Top Twenty, buoyed by a single “Love Never Felt So Good,” a song with special resonance.

Originally recorded at a session back in 1983, the cut sounds like a lost track from “Off the Wall,” complete with a cascading string section, a thumping disco beat and a balletic Jackson vocal. Even the modern production that updates the song can’t obscure its connection to a storied past. Tellingly, the song bolted into the U.S. Top Ten in May, earning first week digital sales of over 100,000 copies.
The success of the song made Jackson the first act in the history of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart to score Top Ten hits in five different decades, going back to the ‘70s. If you include his work with the Jackson 5 like “I Want You Back,” from December of ‘69, his streak would stretch to six decades.

No doubt the success of “Love” has had as much to do with the context of pop today as with the affection and nostalgia surrounding Jackson five years after his passing. To young audiences, “Love Never Felt So Good” could have been a new Timberlake single. That’s ironic since Jackson has served as JT’s strongest influence since his days with N’Sync.
Ultimately, that circular relationship has served the Jackson legacy well. It makes the sound he pioneered back in the day seem like the cutting edge of pop today.

LEGENDARY HOLLYWOOD ACTOR ELI WALLACH DIES AGE 98

Eli Wallach, star of The Magnificent Seven, dies at 98

Courtesy of the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-28012230

Eli Wallach, whose films included The Magnificent Seven and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, has died aged 98.

Character actor Wallach - who began his film career in 1956 after 10 years on stage - was admired for his wide range in a career spanning six decades.

His portrayal of bandit chief Calvera in The Magnificent Seven was regarded by many as his definitive role.

When he received an honorary Oscar in 2011, he was described as a "quintessential chameleon".

Though he was never nominated for an Oscar during his 60-year career, the Academy rewarded him in 2011 for "effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of characters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role".

His films included the classic westerns How the West Was Won and The Misfits.

Arguably best known for his villains, he made a lasting impression as Tuco opposite Clint Eastwood, in Sergio Leone's 1966 spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Years later, Wallach said strangers would recognise him and start whistling the distinctive theme tune.

As an actor I've played more bandits, thieves, warlords, molesters and mafioso than you could shake a stick at," the Hollywood Reporter quoted him as saying.
He was also successful in light comedy and appeared in many TV shows, including playing Mr Freeze for a spell in the 1960s Batman TV series.

The veteran star continued making films into his 90s, making his last big screen appearance in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in 2010.

His death was confirmed by his daughter Katherine in the New York Times.

Wallach was born on 7 December 1915 in Brooklyn to Polish Jewish immigrants.

He graduated from the University of Texas, initially intending to become a teacher.

But his focus shifted to acting, and after serving in World War II he studied at the Actors' Studio, where he became a practitioner of method acting.

He first appeared on the New York stage in 1945, where he met his wife Anne Jackson, to whom he was married for 65 years.

Wallach made his London debut in 1954 with The Teahouse of the August Moon.

His screen debut came two years later, playing an unscrupulous seducer in Baby Doll.

The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor and a Bafta award for most promising newcomer.

But the theatre remained Wallach's first love. "For actors, movies are a means to an end,'' he told the New York Times in 1973.

''I go and get on a horse in Spain for 10 weeks, and I have enough cushion to come back and do a play.''

He became a household name as Calvera in 1960's The Magnificent Seven, alongside Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn.

He went on to earn an Emmy in 1967 for his supporting turn in the drama Poppies Are Also Flowers, and picked up four further nominations - most recently for his guest turns in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2007) and Nurse Jackie (2010).

Other notable roles came in How the West Was Won, Mystic River, The Holiday, Lord Jim, and The Godfather: Part III, playing an ill-fated Mafioso.

Asked about possible retirement, he told the Times in 1997: ''What else am I going to do? I love to act."

MICHAEL JACKSON'S FORMER BODYGUARD RELEASES A TELL ALL BOOK!

'There were no guests at his kid's birthday party': The latest book by Michael Jackson's bodyguards tells a bitter-sweet story about the pop star's secluded life

Courtesy of IBN Live http://ibnlive.in.com/news/there-were-no-guests-at-his-kids-birthday-party-the-latest-book-by-michael-jacksons-bodyguards-tells-a-bittersweet-story-about-the-pop-stars-secluded-life/479581-45-75.html

The following article is a compilation of excerpts and observations from the latest book titled, 'Remember The Time: Protecting Michael Jackson In His Final Days', written by his former security guards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, with Tanner Colby.
Hounded by the tabloid media, Michael Jackson spent his final years moving from city to city, living with his three children -- Prince, Paris and Blanket -- in virtual seclusion. His two security men, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, spent almost all their waking hours with the Jacksons, watching out for them.
Here is a compilation of 10 moving things we didn't know about the 'King of Pop' and his strange, secluded life:

1) "The biggest indulgences for the kids were their birthday parties. For those, Mr Jackson went all out."
Bill and Javon discuss the birthday party for one of Jackson's children. Michael Jackson would have a list of things he'd want done for the kid. Be it a clown, a magician, a popcorn machine or an inflatable jumper. He'd be really specific about the things too. "Make sure you find a clown that can make balloons into different animals," he'd say.
He'd take the children out when his staff was working for the surprise party. "They'd come back and we'd yell, 'SURPRISE!'. We'd have the magician, the clown with the balloons, the cotton candy -- the whole place would be decked out for a party. But there'd be nobody there." There were no other guests, no other children. "It was just the clowns, Mr Jackson, me and Jovon, sometimes the teacher or the nanny. The kids didn't have any friends. It was hard to witness, hard to accept that there was nobody coming around, ringing the bell and bringing gifts."
2) "We rode in the service elevators, with trash bags stacked in the corner, waiting to be hauled down to the basement. That was the world Michael Jackson lived in."
"Everybody thought Michael Jackson led this high-flying life, glamorous life. But never once did we go in through the front lobby, where everything is beautiful and pretty and clean," says Javon. Jackson's security guards recall how they always had to hide from the main entrance of any hotel or restaurant, hide from the paparazzi. There's only one occasion that they remember NOT doing that.
"Mr Jackson had a meeting at the Bellagio, and we ran into Steve Wynn. He asked us to walk through the Bellagio's casino are with him. A few people were gawking, but it wasn't too busy that time of the day. We walked into the front lobby and Mr Jackson looked around and said, "You know, I can't even remember the last time I saw the lobby of a hotel. I forgot how beautiful they are. This is really amazing."
3) "His main contact with the outside world was through the fans. People would send fan mail and gifts too. He would mostly keep the gifts that were handmade -- a collage or a card with a special message on."
There was so much stuff sent by Michael Jackson's fans that the security guards were asked to designate one bedroom as the fan mail room. "The walls were plastered with handmade cards and letters, and the floor was covered with big stacks. And that was just what was accumulated in Las Vegas over a few months' time." They add that except for those letters and occasional visits from his mother or one or two other people, he really was just alone with the kids inside this little bubble."
4) "A lot of the time, hanging out, he was just a regular dude. But every now and then you'd get these reminders of how isolated his life had been, like with some of the words he used."
One of the times the Jacksons had to stay at a hotel, they'd snuck in Prince's dog into the room. The dog wasn't properly house-trained, and they couldn't walk it. "You can imagine what it smelled like in there after a couple of days.
"Bill I need you to go out and get some smells."
"Smells? What's 'smells'?"
"You know, things to make the room smell good."
"You mean air fresheners?"
"Yeah, yeah. Stuff like that."
5) "He'd read anything and everything he could get his hands on. History, science, art. He'd drop $5,000 like he was buying a pack of gums. At one point, he actually bought a bookstore."
Bill says that it was on one of the trips back from Tokyo, in LA. Jackson went to visit this used bookstore. It had a lot of rare books from the personal libraries of some pretty famous people, Hollywood stars. "There were books that Humphrey Bogart had signed, books that Ingrid Bergman had signed." Jackson wanted to buy all of them, but the owner didn't take him seriously. "So he made him an offer of $100,000. Said he'd pay cash on the spot. Couple of weeks after he got back from LA, this truck filled with all this books showed up at the house in Vegas."
6) "He never wore reading glasses in public."
Bill says that whenever Jackson went to a bookstore, he'd always go to that rack where they keep the glasses. Jackson would grab a bunch and try them until he found a pair that matched his prescription. "When he read at home, he had one of those magnifying glasses that they use in doctors' offices, the kind with a built-in light that blows things up about a billion times bigger."
7) "He read The Wall Street Journal every day, and never watched TV. Only DVDs. He was also a huge fan of 'The Simpsons'."
Bill says that Jackson liked to read newspapers from different countries, in different languages, irregardless of whether he understood it or not. "He read the WSJ every day. That was the only American media he'd consume, because that paper was pretty much the only place he could get real news without running into crazy Michael Jackson stories."
Bill and Javon add that they made sure that they kept any magazines/newspapers with negative articles about him, out of his reach.
8) "Get something nourishing. Don't get drugs," Jackson would tell the homeless person he had just given money to.
One time, at Jackson's insistence, Bill and Javon took him to an area populated by homeless people. Jackson cracked open the window, and called out to the homeless, distributing $100 bills to them. He preferred giving money to the women. "People started lining up outside his window like it was an ATM."
9) "I need you to bring something back for me. It is very important. In my bedroom, to the left, is a walk-in closet. Inside the closet, there's a small hidden door. Inside there you'll find a silver metal briefcase. I need you to bring me that briefcase."
Bill says that inside the silver metal briefcase, were two Academy Awards. "When I looked more closely at them, they had both had 'Gone With The Wind' written on them. One was for Best Picture. I looked it up online. Apparently, these two statues wre the most valuable Oscars ever bought at auction. Mr Jackson paid $1.5 million for them back in 1999. It's in the 'Guinness World Records'.
10) "Friend" and "Flower", his mysterious women guests
Michael Jackson had an Eastern European lady friend whom he'd hug and kiss in the back of his chauffeur-driven car, his former bodyguards said. The singer had another female visitor nicknamed 'Flower' as well. 'Flower' visited a few days after 'Friend' and while she and the pop star were close, Jackson was more fond of 'Friend'.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER IS OUT OF THE COMA AND HAS LEFT HOSPITAL!

BREAKING NEWS: Michael Schumacher ski accident: F1 legend 'can see and hear' after coming out of coma and leaving hospital

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/michael-schumacher-ski-accident-f1-3703400#ixzz34nz571Kh

The racing legend had been in an artificially-induced coma since suffering severe head injuries in the accident last December

Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left hospital six months after he suffered an horrific skiing accident.
The seven-times Formula One world champion had sustained severe head injuries in the incident in the French Alps in December, and was subsequently put into an artificially-induced coma a few days later.
FOR ALL THE LATEST ON SCHUMACHER'S RECOVERY - FOLLOW OUR LIVE BLOG.
But his management company said in a statement on Monday: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore."
Schumacher's family and manager last spoke about his health condition in the middle of April, stating that the German ace has "moments of consciousness and awakening."
But now manager Sabine Kehm confirmed Schumacher has been moved to a separate specialist clinic in Switzerland because he responds to outside stimulation - and can apparently see and hear.

She said: “Michael left the hospital in Grenoble to continue his long period of rehabilitation. He is no longer in a coma.
“His family would like to expressly thank the excellent work of  all physicians, nurses, carers and therapists in Grenoble in the past months, as well as thanking the first responders on the scene of the accident.
“The family thanks to all the people who sent so many good wishes Michael. You have really helped him. For the future we ask for understanding that his rehabilitation will take place outside of the public eye.”
Kehm also threatened legal action against journalists who dared to report on his therapy in the future.
At the weekend German magazine Bunte said while he was out of danger, the chances of his full recovery had nonetheless “dipped.”
But now, 170 days since he smashed his skull on to rocks while ski-ing at the resort of Meribel in the French Alps, Schumacher seems to have responded to the massive efforts to bring him out of the medically induced coma which first began four months ago.
But there is no telling how long his therapy might take or how much of his old self he can recover after close to six months unconsciousness.
Reports in Germany said 45-year-old father of two Schumacher can communicate with wife Corinne  and Corinna,45, and children Gina Marie, 17, and son Mick, 14.
One report said: “The specialists in Grenoble thought his condition so stable that he no longer requires their help."
Schumacher is thought to have lost a quarter of his body weight since the accident and has had his muscles and joints massaged daily since he was placed in intensive care following being airlifted from the crash site.
Schumacher is understood to have been transferred in an ambulance on Sunday to a rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland, not far from his home.
With an accumulated wealth estimated to be well over half-a-billion pounds, Schumacher’s family is well placed to provide the limitless care that will be needed in the coming years.
This will include  physiotherapists, to massage his atrophying joints, doctors, nutritionists, nurses and neurological experts.
Corinna and Schumacher met in 1991 on the F1 circuit after she was previously married to racing driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
She once said: “Michael’s passion for racing is just huge, it would have been impossible without this deep passion; this passion has made him, who he is. I got to know him as a racer, and I had previously always had fullest confidence in him.”
But she made him promise after a 2009 motorcycle accident in Spain that almost landed him in a wheelchair that the days of thrills and spills must be tempered.
He referred to his marriage as “total harmony,” adding: “We have the same vision of how we want to spend our lives.  My wife Corinna and our harmonious family - that is my main force always at play in the background.”
She and her children sat  an almost constant vigil at his bedside since the accident, surrounding him with good luck charms, photos and letters from wellwishers. The F1 legend had been in hospital for more than six months since an horrific skiing accident

RAPPER EVE WEDS DESIGNER FIANCEE MAXIMILLION COOPER IN IBIZA!

Rapper Eve Weds Maximillion Cooper in Ibiza
Grammy-award winning rapper Eve is now a married woman. The Philadelphia native reportedly tied the knot over the weekend in sunny Ibiza, Spain to British designer and Gumball 3000 Motor Rally race founder and CEO Maximillion Cooper. This marks Eve’s first marriage and Cooper’s second.
Eve and Cooper celebrated their happy day exchanging vows on the beach surrounded by close family and friends. The bride wore a beautiful Alice Temperly bridal gown and the groom declared his love for his betrothed saying how happy he is to make Eve his wife.
Engaged since last year, 35-year-old Eve, whose legal name is Eve Jeffers met 41-year-old Maximillion Cooper back in 2010 at his annual Gumball 3000 Motor Rally and they have been together ever since. Eve has been titled by those connected with the Motor Rally Race as the “First Lady of Gumball.”  The couple was engaged in Edinburgh, Scotland over the Christmas holiday last year.
Rapper and hip-hop artist Eve first came on the music scene in 1999 with her unique sound and quick rap lyrics from her début album Let There Be Eve..Ruff Ryders’ First Lady and it became an instant hit. The musical diva would follow-up on the immense success of her first album with the recording project called Scorpion that included the international crossover hit single Let Me Blow Ya Mind, a collaboration with No Doubt front singer Gwen Stefani that was produced by Dr. Dre.
While Eve’s rap career would wane over the years as the music industry went through a shift in musical styles, Eve would segue and find equal success in the world of film in television. The rapper-turned-actress starred in her very own sitcom entitled Eve, which ran for three seasons on the UPN network and would find film work in projects like xXx with Vin Diesel and a role in the Barbershop movie franchise produced and starring fellow rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube. Eve would also have a dramatic role opposite Kevin Bacon in the Lee Daniels feature film The Woodsman.
Now newly married, Eve is also stepping into the new role of being the stepmother to Maximillion Cooper’s four young children from a previous relationship. The Gumball 3000 Motor Rally, which is a 3000 mile race that takes place over 13 countries, takes place on public roads and must be completed in seven days and Cooper is credited for creating one of the most celebrated race car events in the world. Originally from Stattfordshire, England, along with his endeavors with the race car industry, Maximillion Cooper is also an entrepreneur and a noted fashion designer with a reported net worth estimated at $50 million.
The couple both admit that neither had ever been involved in interracial relationships in the past and say that they are proof positive that love will show up in people and places you least expect. As for kids of their own, Eve has mentioned, in earlier interviews, that while she never thought she would be one to have children, she is not opposed to the idea of having babies with Cooper.

"Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken ... The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad."
Kasem's longtime friend, Gonzalo Venecia, and his younger brother, Mouner Kasem, were also with him when he died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, a family member said.
Casey Kasem had been suffering from Lewy body disease, the most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's.
He had recently been the subject of a bitter court battle involving three of his children by a previous marriage and his wife, Jean.

His oldest children, who challenged their stepmother for control of Kasem's medical decisions in his last months, are not fighting his wife for possession of his remains, a family member told CNN Sunday.
Daughter Julie Kasem will host a memorial celebration at her Northridge, California, home on Saturday, June 21, the family member said. No other funeral arrangements were yet known.
No autopsy is expected since Kasem died under a doctor's care in a hospital. The immediate cause of death was from sepsis caused by an ulcerated bedsore, the family member said.
In May, a California judge awarded Kerri Kasem temporary power of attorney after Jean Kasem took her husband out of a nursing home and moved him to Washington amid family feuding.
A Washington judge later allowed Kerri to visit her father in that state.
Casey Kasem was hospitalized after an argument between Jean and Kerri in which his wife threw meat at her stepdaughter.
Last week, a Los Angeles County judge gave daughter Kerri Kasem the authority to have doctors end his infusions of water, food and medicine.
Kasem was already a popular disc jockey in Los Angeles when he became the host of "American Top 40" in 1970. The syndicated show, which counted down the 40 most popular songs in the United States based on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 music chart, began on just seven radio stations but quickly became a mainstay of thousands, all around the world.
"When we first went on the air, I thought we would be around for at least 20 years. I knew the formula worked. I knew people tuned in to find out what the No. 1 record was," he told Variety in 1989.
Kasem's first No. 1, concluding the "AT40" premiere show of July 4, 1970, was Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)." His last on successor show "American Top 20," almost exactly 39 years later, was "Second Chance" by Shinedown.
But the show wasn't just about finding out who was No. 1.
Its features, included biographical details on performs, flashbacks, album cuts and Kasem's "long-distance dedication" for listeners who wrote to dedicate songs to friends and loved ones far away.
Kasem, whose baritone was always friendly and upbeat, delivered these in his most sympathetic voice, warm enough to melt butter. "Dear Casey," he began, and would read an emotional letter from a listener who wanted to connect with an old flame, express regret to a new love or send wishes to a far-flung family member.
The first one, for example, was from a male listener who wanted to dedicate Neil Diamond's "Desiree" to a sweetheart named Desiree who was moving to Germany.
The show, originally three hours, expanded to four in the late '70s.
In many ways, even as Top 40 radio moved from the AM to the FM dial and took on the name "Contemporary Hit Radio," "American Top 40" remained a throwback to the way the format was in the 1960s, with frequent number jingles ("Number 29!") and a fast-moving mix, though Kasem, in temperament, practically defined the laid-back hosts of the Me Decade. (The exception to the laid-back rule was a much-copied outtake, now readily available on the Internet, of Kasem exploding in anger over a long-distance dedication that succeeded an up-tempo record.)

The show inspired several imitators, including a television version, "America's Top 10," hosted by Kasem himself.

Kasem left "American Top 40" in 1988 over a contract dispute with ABC Radio Networks and signed with competitor Westwood One, for whom he started a show called "Casey's Top 40" in 1989. The new show used a different publication's chart, but it was the same old Casey: smooth, cheerful, full of information.

"The magic of Casey is that he is the ultimate professional in whatever he does. ... He enlightens, he explores, he suggests, he provokes and he informs," fellow DJ Gary Owens told Billboard in 1997.
Kasem acquired the name "American Top 40" and in 1998 resumed hosting the program with a new syndicator. (The ABC show, with Shadoe Stevens replacing Kasem, had been canceled in 1995.) He handed off to Ryan Seacrest in 2004, though he continued with two other shows, "American Top 20" and "American Top 10," until signing off in 2009 -- as always with his trademark line, "Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars."

Kemal Amin Kasem was born in Detroit in 1932. He first tried radio while in high school but found he had a talent for it while serving in Korea with the Army. He was a DJ on the Armed Forces Radio Network.

After stops in several cities, including Flint, Michigan; Buffalo, New York; and San Francisco, he joined KRLA in Los Angeles in 1963, partly in hopes of an acting career. He did earn roles in a number of low-budget movies -- the most famous of which was probably "The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant" (1971) -- but his voice was always his ticket to fame, whether appearing on a Dick Clark-produced TV show, "Shebang," or voicing the character of Shaggy on the cartoon "Scooby-Doo," which premiered in 1969. (He also was the voice of Robin on "Super Friends.")
That voice became ubiquitous. He was NBC's promotional announcer in the late '70s and early '80s, and heard on dozens of commercials.
But "American Top 40" remains his legacy.
"Kasem started the show in 1970, a curious time to start a show about Top 40 mainstream pop, because the format had just been pronounced dead and progressive album-oriented radio was on the rise," wrote Susan Orlean in a 1990 New York Times Magazine profile. "He infused the show with corny reverence for conventional American values exactly when cynicism had become the more fashionable posture."
Kasem attributed his success to that everyday voice.
"It's not a clear-toned announcer's voice," he told the Times. "It's more like the voice of the guy next door.''
Kasem is survived by his second wife, Jean, whom he married in 1985; and four children.
