Dennis Edwards, who joined the top Motown act the Temptations to take lead vocals on some of the
group’s most memorable latter-day hits such as “Just My Imagination,” died
Friday in Chicago of undisclosed causes. He was 74.
In 1968, Edwards stepped in to replace founding lead
singer David Ruffin in “the Temps.” While Ruffin had specialized largely in
smoother romantic balladry, the gospel-trained Edwards sported a grittier
style, and he left a distinctive mark on the unit’s work as both lead vocalist
and in the ensemble harmonies.
His arrival in the Temptations coincided with the increasingly expansive
and experimental “psychedelic soul” productions helmed by Norman Whitfield, who
also co-wrote many of their biggest chart hits, many of which featured pointed
social or political content.
Edwards essayed a solo career, and his 1984 Motown single
“Don’t Look Any Further,” a duet with Siedah Garrett, reached No. 2 on the
R&B charts in 1984. But he remained best known as a member of the
Temptations; after a split with the act in 1977, he returned for a short second
tour of duty in 1987.
After a wrangle with founding member Otis Williams, he
toured during the ‘90s under the rubric the Temptations Review featuring Dennis
Edwards.
In 1989, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame as a member of the Temptations.
Edwards was born Feb. 3, 1943 in Fairfield, Ala. His
father was a minister, and he grew up singing in the church. He moved with his
family to Detroit in the early ‘50s.
As a teen, Edwards sang gospel, but, like Sam Cooke and
many other prominent gospel performers, he turned to rhythm & blues. He
briefly led his own group, Dennis Edwards and the Fireballs. In 1966, after a
stint in the military, he joined Motown on retainer in a utility role, and
worked briefly with the Contours.
David Ruffin’s escalating drug problems and egomania
created tension within the Temptations, and in 1968 Williams and Eddie
Kendricks brought Edwards into the act, while Ruffin exited for a solo career.
Edwards’ presence toughened the group’s vocal sound, and
his presence helped loft Whitfield’s ingenious, densely produced records –
which reflected the influence of Sly & the Family Stone and other rock-leaning
soul acts of the day – to the pinnacle of both the pop and R&B charts.
His years of prominence with the group
coincided with the Temps’ biggest pop albums: “Cloud Nine” (No. 4, 1969),
“Puzzle People” (No. 5, 1969), “Psychedelic Shack” (No. 9, 1970), “All
Directions” (No. 2, 1972) and “Masterpiece” (No. 7, 1973). All of those titles
hit No. 1 on the R&B albums charts.
Increasingly poor inter-group relations led Williams to
fire Edwards, but, after a decade of solo work, he returned to the unit in 1987
after his replacement Ali Woodson’s departure. A second termination came within
a year. Edwards’ plans to record with former Temps members Ruffin and Kendricks
crashed after Ruffin’s death from a drug overdose in 1991.
Edwards is survived by a daughter from his brief marriage
to Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters
CAROL JIANI - THE GRAND DIVA OF DISCO WHO SHAPED THE DISCO ERA
Carol Jiani the grand diva of disco, well known for the biggest ever gay anthem from 1981, "Hit And Run Lover", which was so popular with D.J.s. For anyone who doesn't know, Carol is a deliciously outrageous, larger than life, African singer, who moved to Montreal and had a huge hit with "Hit And Run Lover". Her real name is Uchena Ikejiani. She then moved to England and worked with record producer Ian Levine. She signed to Record Shack to record "Vanity". After that she got a record deal with MCA records, and released " Such A Joy Honey ". Then came the song, " Turning My Back And Walking Away ", which was to have been her second single for MCA, and was indeed recorded for them. After that, we ended up doing a whole album, "The Best Of Carol Jiani" for Hot Records in Miami, and we re-recorded "Hit And Run Lover" as well as a great version of the Dells' old soul classic, " Make Sure You Have Someone Who Loves You ".
Carol Jiani's "Hit N Run Lover" became a long-running anthem within the '80s Hi-NRG scene, a song that never seemed to lose its appeal, particularly among the gay community. The song soared to the top of the disco chart in May 1981, and continued to be spun by DJs for years afterward and compiled on the occasional compilation CD. In the '90s, a few Jiani best-ofs surfaced, and many of her songs were re-released on vinyl.
Another of the 1980s Record Shack classics that people most remember. This song, "Vanity" was originally recorded by Barbara Pennington, who didn't want to release it, because she was determined to get away from High Energy and back to real soul, so we recorded it on Carol, and released it as a single on the Record Shack label.
Carol sang one of the key songs from the album, "Northern Soul 2007", which we released on Centre City Records and is still available to buy. Carol was reunited with producer extraordinaire Ian Levine, who first produced her music for Record Shack Records. Carol is a true Diva, she is still performing to this day, and in 2006 we made a brand new recording together, a version of France Joli's "Come To Me". But to this day, she is best known for this song.
London Guru: For those who may be a little unfamiliar with you, would you be so kind as to give our readers a quick snapshot of Carol Jiani the diva?
Uchenna Carol Ikejiani was born in Nigeria to an Igbo family. i moved from Nigeria to Montreal, Canada in the mid-1970s to study at Concordia University. In autumn 1977 i auditioned to appear on Joe La Greca's album Montreal. In early 1978 I recorded two tracks for the project, "If You Believe in Me" and "Higher and Higher". These were released on an EP, with credited under Uchenna Nigerian name Carol is my middle name. Glenn LaRusso of Salsoul Records convinced me to shorten my name from Uchenna Ikejiani to Carol Jiani to make it easier for North Americans to pronounce.
In 1980 i recorded two Sandy Wilbur-written pieces with La Greca, "Hit N Run Lover" and "All The People Of The World". "Hit N Run Lover" was remixed by San Francisco-based Moby Dick Records for their Gold Standard imprint and would become my signature song, peaking at number 4 on the US Billboard Club Play Singles chart in 1981. On the heels "Hit N' Run Lover's" success Matra Records commissioned a complete album, also titled Hit N' Run Lover. "The Woman in Me" was the album's second single but its B-side, the uptempo "Mercy" written by Pete Bellotte and Sylvester Levay which featured off-key horns, exceeded the A-side in popularity among DJs becoming another hit for me. "Mercy," the only track on the album not composed by Sandy Wilbur, was recorded earlier by Judy Cheeks.
A follow-up album, Ask Me was released the next year generating the singles "Ask Me," "X-Rated," and "You're Gonna Lose My Love". In 1982 i recorded vocals for "Get Up and Do It Again.

I started the campaign because so many people were dying because of the bad roads in Nigeria but really it was when a Nigerian Recording Artist that i was to collaborate with died in a car accident his name was MC LOPH that really made me so angry and that was why i started the campaign things must change back home for the better we must deal with this mess and save lives.
London Guru: You have also been vocal about housing the homeless in Nigeria. How serious is the situation and how do you hope your campaign will change things?
It is serious back home people are leaving under bridges there is no welfare system back home it is a right that all human beings are housed.. this makes me sad this is a priority man is greedy and things must change. Well i own most of my master recordings and sales from my music will help towards building shelters .. that is why i have no time for politics in this business some of us are luck with our gifts we must give back to the society.
