London
|
2012
|
United Kingdom
|
The most modern Summer Olympic
Games hosted by a city is three, by London, UK, in 1908, 1948 and 2012.
Athens hosted the Summer Olympics
in 1896, 1906 and 2004 but the 1906 Games (known as the 1906 Intercalated
Games) are no longer recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Therefore, officially, London is the only city to host the Games three times.
1908 - the fourth modern Olympic Games on the recognized four-year cycle
(following the downgrading of Athens 1906). The first Olympic Games were
staged in 1896. 1948 - known as the "Austerity Games" following
World War II; the first Summer Olympics since Berlin 1936. London is only the
fourth capital city to host the Summer Olympics on more than one occasion -
Paris, France (1900 & 1924), Stockholm, Sweden (1912 & 1956 -
equestrian events only) and Athens, Greece (1896 & 2004) share this
honour. Los Angeles also hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1984,
but is not, of course, a capital city.

London Olympic Games 2012
|
2012
|
United Kingdom
|
In terms of "sport-related
costs", London 2012 is the most expensive Olympics ever at £8.4 billion
($13.01 billion), according to a report by Oxford University's Said Business School.
The figure, which includes security, transport, opening and closing
ceremonies, construction of venues and the athletes' village but excludes
expensive infrastructure projects (such as those commissioned for Athens 2004
and Beijing 2008), means that the London Games are now 100 per cent over its
original budget, set at£4.2 billion ($6.5 billion) in 2004.
The report compares the cost of all
Summer and Winter Olympic Games over the last 50 years. The 2008 Beijing
Games were widely believed to be the most expensive Games on record with many
estimates putting the total at £22 billion ($34.09 billion), but researchers
believe the bill may have been £3.13 billion ($4.85 billion) due to China's
cheaper labour.

Most countries participating at a
Summer Olympic Games
|
Beijing Olympic Games 2008
|
2008
|
China
|
A total of 204 National Olympic
Committees (NOCs) were represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics held in
Beijing, China. Three countries - Montenegro, the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu
-took part in the Games for the first time in 2008 after being recognized as
NOCs in 2008, 2006 and 2008, respectively. Brunei were the only NOC not to be
represented in Beijing.
There are currently 204 NOCs in
existence, and with no countries threatening to boycott the London Olympics,
it is expected that London will tie the record set by Beijing in 2008, even
though only 200 nations have officially qualified for the Games. * This
record was previously held by Athens 2004, with 201 NOCs represented. The
number of participating NOCs has increased with every Olympics since Moscow 1980.
As of 2012, there are a number of unrecognized NOCs, including Macau,
Gibraltar, Montserrat and the Turks & Caicos Islands, so this record
could well be broken at future Olympic Games.

First Olympic Games to pass the

|
London Olympics, 1908 Moscow
Olympics, 1980 Sydney Olympics, 2000
|
2008

Australia, Russia, United Kingdom
|
The first modern Olympics, held in
Athens in 1896, hosted just 43 events across nine sports, the fewest in
Olympic history. However, as interest in the Games spread and more nations
began taking part, so the number of sports and individual events grew. London
1908 was the first Games to breach the 100-event barrier, with 110 events
across 22 sports, but it would be another 72 years before the 200 mark was
passed, with Moscow 1980 hosting 203 events across 21 sports. In 2000, the
Sydney Games again took the Olympics to a new level, featuring 300 events
across a total of 28 sports. Since 2008, however, baseball and softball have
been dropped from the schedule to leave a total of 26 Olympic sports going
into London 2012.
